I continually get a Messenger box advertising a new update
on my screen. I can't get rid of it and it sits there on
my screen driving me nuts. Can anybody tell me how to
ditch Messenger permanently? Thanks. Doug

Asking this question in windowsxp.general or some other NG would be more
appropriate.

In future, try to get your queries in the right group, and
indeed try using google groups to find your answer before
posting.
You can disable the messenger service by going into the
services control panel, setting it to not start
automatically, and stopping it.

its easy: do the update. The old messie will not work anymore in the near
future because MS has changed something in the protocol. See MSN for more
info.
If you don't need the Messie you can disable 'start with Windows' option in
the general settings.
If you are using the Messie in XP embedded: there is a readme on the
Microsoft server about the changes.
