Messenger Install

Can someone please tell me why when I run my AVG virus software install program, the installation wizard for Messenger 6.1 comes up instead
The only difference between my latest build of XP Pro from previous installs is that I've opted for an ntfs file system rather than fat32. Is this likely to be the culprit ?

Steve,
There are some issues with Norton Antivirus and Messenger. I think there is an option in Norton to disable instant message scanning. I'm not sure you need to but here is how to uninstall Messenger completely (based on the default install of XP)

- Add or Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components | uncheck Messenger
- also run the following command if you have installed XP Service Pack 1:
Start button | Run | type "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"
Just click OK if any error pops up, then you will see a progress bar appear shortly as it deletes its files and it will then ask you to reboot. After the reboot the program will be gone.

Hope this helps

Greetings Shane,

Firstly, what you're describing below will remove Windows Messenger, not MSN Messenger, as
the poster is describing.
Secondly, the problem here is AVG, not Norton Antivirus
Thirdly, the problem is with the Windows Installer, not the actual applications themselves.

Greetings Steve,

Actually the installer for MSN Messenger 6.x will come up eventually, but the Windows
Installer has detected that the AVG installation needs to be "repaired" and as such, is
coming up. As such, you can either just proceed through the AVG install again (and hope it
doesn't keep appearing), and then install MSN Messenger 6.x, or, you can forcibly remove the
AVG installer (but keep the application) by using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/office2000pro/util20/1/NT4/EN-US/msicuu.exe

Run and install the program after you've downloaded it. After the setup is complete, click
Start, then Programs (All Programs if you're using XP), then Windows Install Clean Up.

Click AVG (however it comes up) and then click 'Remove'. Click 'OK' to the warning message
that comes up. After doing this, AVG still should keep working, if it doesn't, you'll then
have to reinstall it (although it shouldn't pop up again when trying to install other
applications later).

Thanks for that Jonathon
The problem is actually the other way round, but I might be able to use the same fix.
I installed Messenger 6 then tried to install AVG. The installation program for messenger would then take over from the AVG install and ask if I wanted to repair my messenger installation.
If I remove the messenger installer then hopefully AVG will install without any problems.
