I've been having a problem where the latest version of Messenger (I recently
updated in hopes of fixing this problem) does not appear in the system tray.
It is set to Always Show, but in the Customize Notifications dialog, the
item only has the generic folder icon rather than the Messenger icon. I've
tried killing msmgs and restarting, but no luck. Seems to happen a lot when
my machine wakes up from standby. Anyone have this problem and know how to
force the Messenger window to open? I *really* sucks having to reboot to
see if maybe I can IM someone.

Greetings Keith,

You can always bring up Messenger by clicking Start, then Run, typing "msmsgs" (or "msnmsgr"
if you're using MSN Messenger) and click OK.

However, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Windows Messenger and cause
it to also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton
Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton
Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and
click OK.

Restarting msgmWhyNotUseMoreCharactersSinceTheFSSupportsIt.exe didn't work
either, but I didn't even think to look at NAV. I'll give that a shot and
see if it helps.
