messenger causing huge firewall log

I have Zone Alarm & it blocks hundreds & hundreds of
outgoing attempts from the Messenger program on a daily
basis.

I have set win messenger options to not run on startup,
removed it from add/remove windows components, and I have
disabled NAV 2003 instant messenger scan from running
(due to conflicts I read about on this forum) yet it
keeps running & running & running......

Has anyone else had these attempts/logs with their
firewalls???

I have this same behavior. Windows messenger even tries
to dial into the internet when I'm not online. I can't
find any settings inside Messenger that would stop this.
Actually I was searching this newsgroup for just this
problem. My current solution is to do just what you are
doing and I downloaded Zone Alarm and denied messenger
access to the internet unless it asks and I grant it.
When the computer is unattended I leave the internet
locked in ZA. So far this is the best solution I've come
up with. It seems messenger is trying to send data out
ever few hours.

Good to know I'm not alone. This sucks, I'm so sick of
all these programs that don't have a way to stop them
from trying to connect. Other offeders are DS Log which
is Dell's support, M.S Office, Sonic update manager which
is a CD label program that tries to connect. they all
have options to not auto update which I select, however
they still wake up and try to phone home.

BUT MESSENGER is the WORST! it attempts every hour for 3
hours at a clip at 600 attempts per hr. or so, then it
quiets down & out of nowhere it starts up again. I think
it happens to more people but they just don't check their
firewall logs or task mgr to see whats going on. There
should be a way WITHIN the program to KILL IT!!

I have real concerns about the stability & performance of
my work programs with the firewall grinding away blocking
hundreds of attempts.

Hopefully someone can help us with this:)

I am using Zone Alarm and I don't get these messages. Do you have your
firewall alerts set to log "everything" or just high security alerts?

You might want to try and tweak your settings,, I am not familiar with
Norton,, so I can't help you that way.

Hope this helps
