Matt

I am getting ready to deploy WinXP at work. One of the
features I would like to enable to my end users is the
Remote Assistant. MS IM is one of the communication
options to use the RA. I can see alot of inter office
benefits of allowing use of the IM as well.

My questions are is there a way to a) remove MS IM's
connection from .NET Passports b) prohibit outside
communications through the IM.

I also noticed in the options tab on the IM an
authentication option of Passport or Communications Server
(see question a above). Can anyone point me in the
direction of what this "Communication Server" is. The
only item I could find on Microsoft's web site is in Beta
form for the next Office release.

Thanks

I forgot one imporatant item. We do not use Exchange. We
use Lotus Notes/Domino for out mail/database management.
I do realize the Outlook Express will allow us to use
remote assistant, but if I have to choose on feature
(outlook express/instant messagenger), I choose IM.

Greetings Matt,

Unfortunately without using Exchange IM, SIP-based Communications Service (which is
essentially just the upcoming Office RTC Server) or using the actual public .NET Messenger
network, there is no other way to use Messenger.

To answer your question, there are some policies for Windows Messenger, which allow you to
control which service people connect to, but there is nothing to stop "outside" communication
if you're using the public network.

There is actually another option for Remote Assistance that you might find useful. If you
click Start, Help & Support, then "Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose
problems", choose 'Offer Remote Assistance' on the left and then you can enter a computer's
name or IP address to "offer" a user assistance. In order for this to work, you'll need to
set the proper policy on the PCs:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/rmassist.asp (see the
'Offering Remote Assistance to a user' heading).
