I recently upgraded to a 200GB SATA HD (NTFS) and used Norton Ghost 10 to
image the new drive. I'm using Windows XP SP2 and all of the updates are
installed. Windows Messenger Live 8.0 worked fine on the old (IEEE) hard
drive, but crashes soon after logging-in on the new drive. The client loads
without an error, sign in works fine, but just as my contact list is loaded
the client crashes. I'm prompted to send an error report and additional
extended error information to Microsoft, which I did. I have uninstalled,
reinstalled and repaired the client without success. I tried to go back to
version. 7.5, but the service failed to start and provided the error message:
This application has failed to start because msidcrl40.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem'... it doesn’t. I have
disabled all fire wall, anti-spyware, and anti-virus software and run chkdsk
/r /f, again with negative results. The odd thing is that Windows Messenger
4.7 runs fine. Any suggestions?

I had the same MSN Messenger8.0 crashing soon after logging in at MSN - on
my machine, the issue is caused by IE 7.0 Beta 2, ieframe.dll giving an
exception error. Windows messenger 5.1 works w/ IE, though. I tried
reinstalls with different setups (MSN Toolbar etc), various setttings
(albeit some MSN Messenger options such as 'Open MSN on start up were grayed
out) w/ same sorry result. I tried some other options in IE 7.0 Beta with
the same error.
Eventually, I uninstalled IE 7.0 and now the latest MSN Messenger works as
it should.

Thanks for the information... I had the same issues with 7.0 and some other
applications that would crash after launch. I deleted 7.0 and went back 6.0
and the problems with other programs stopped, but the problem with Messenger
8.0 persists.
