I was also have this same problem. I fixed it by removing
the MSN Messenger
folder from:
C:\Documents and
Settings\<userNameGoesHere>\Application Data\Microsoft
Once the folder was removed, Messenger created a new one
once I successfully
logged back in.
This also worked for me.
