Somehow the icon for .doc files in Windows Explorer got changed from the
MS Word icon to the one for WordPad. How do I change it back?

Chuck, I've never actually done this, but it should work.

Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types > Scroll down and click the
"DOC" extension. Then, click the "Advanced" button and then the "Change Icon"
button. Select the desired icon and click OK.

Went to the File Types and highlighted .DOC. There is no "advanced"
button and the icon shown there is the correct one for MS Word. However
when you look at the file pane in the explorer, it still shows the
wordpad icon.

This all started when I installed a trial version of Alienware's
alienGUIse theme manager which I believe is based on Window Blinds. I
didn't like it and uninstalled it. I am wondering if some component get
left behind.

There is no "advanced" button

Click the "Restore" button once.

Click the "Restore" button once.

Now it says the associated app is Wordpad instead of Word and if I
double click a .doc file, it opens in wordpad. I want it to use Word. I
next tried right clicking the file name, and selecting "choose program"
from the context menu and set it to "Microsoft Word". The files open
with MS Word again, but the icon is still wrong.

Open File Types dialog and click the "Restore" button again. Then click the
"Advanced" button and change the "open" action (set it to open with
Winword.exe). Alternately, use the ASSOC command to associate .DOC files
correctly with Microsoft Word.

If you have MS Word 2000 installed, type this command in Start, Run:

cmd /c assoc .doc=Word.Document.8

Yes, that's the key. Open Regedit.exe and navigate to that location.

Set the data as follows:

C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}\wordicon.exe,1

If that path is unavailable, then set it as:
