Messages Disappeared

I do not read email everyday and some emails are probably months old, but
today those messages are gone. I have not deleted them. Is there a setting I
can change that may automatically delete messages that have been opened but
not locked?
 
Ok. I have found the messages, but how do I change my inbox to show all
messages, not just unread messages...and how did that get changed anyway?
 
There's a pull-down box on the right side of the toolbar... just select
"show all messages".
Or click on View - Current view - show all messages.

Each folder can have a different setting.
