Message rules in Vista Mail

Alec Benson

I set message rules in Vista Mail to forward mesages from specific senders
to various folders. Twice all my rules have just disappeared and have had to
be recreated from scratch.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a way to create a backup
of the message rules?

This is also happening to me. I have 4 message rules. The last rule in the
list is always disappearing. I'm wondering is there a limit on the number of
rules?

If there is a limit, it's more than 4.... as I have 8 mail rules.

When you create this rule, are you making sure to give it a different name,
and click on "save rule", and then click on "Ok", rather than "Cancel"?

Rules are set up correctly. I've tried reshuffling my order of rules and it
seems that whatever rule is on the bottom (fourth in my case) disappears
after two or three 'Mail' restarts.

might want to provide a list of the programs you normally run on your computer.
one of them might be interfering/causing this problem.
after 2 years of running vista can say have NEVER had a rule disappear. have 20 in place.

post the list back here for everyone to see and comment on.

Which third party security programs are you running?
(antivirus, anti-spyware, etc.)

I'm running BitDefender Internet Security 2008
and Ad-Aware 2007
Windows Defender and Firewall are turned off.

I would guess that your problem is caused by either BitDefender
or Ad-Aware. The only way to find out is to uninstall one, reboot,
then see if the Windows Mail problem has disappeared. You may
have to uninstall both, at least for testing purposes.

my first suspect would be bit defender.
uninstall it and try it for a couple of days.
if you use it for virus then try either AVG or AVAST.
if for firewall.
then enable windows firewall.
it has the ability to use both in/out bound rules for protection.

AVG Free, Office 2000, Nero 7, various Canon photo utilities, Cute PDF, Adobe Reader 8, various Dell utilities.

I am also having the same issues witht he Vista Email Message Rules:

1. After creating the rules, some of them would disappear on me. I was
making about 7-10 rules, and I think that I was able to make at least
7...maybe 8, before some of them would start to disappear on me.

2. After I did a complete shut down, ALL of the message rules disappeared
on me. This has happened to me three times already :(

Please keep in mind that I'm experiencing this in a new computer that I
received yesterday afternoon from Dell. Other than the Dell software that
they loaded, McAfee and Roxio CD Creator, and Microsoft Works, there
shouldn't be any other third party software loaded.

Also, the message rules that I did set up worked fine when I ran them, so
that I believe they are set up ok....it's just the disappearing rules that
have me stumped.

It is interesting that both of us have Dell computers. I wonder if this is
more than a coincidence.

The cr*pware that Dell preloads on their machines may
have a deleterious effect.
