message from microsoft security

Many thanks to everyone who replied.

I will trash this e-mail and notify others to do the
same. I almost clicked on it becuase it was from
(e-mail address removed), but was leary about doing that.
Glad I checked.

If someone turned up on your doorstep and said "I'm from Microsoft
Security", and asked to install a patch on your systems, you'd ask to see
some proof of identification. Similarly, if you received a regular disk
mailer with "Microsoft, Inc" written by hand on the "From" part of the
address label, you'd throw the enclosed CD-ROM away.

Yet, when you receive an email whose only identifying feature is that it
claims to be from a microsoft.com address, do you treat it as if it was
definitely from Microsoft? You really shouldn't.

"From" addresses in email are as reliable as that hand-written address
label. Anyone could write anything they wanted in there.
