I have a 40gb Maxtor disk that has died. The message is 'error sensing
hard disk ', and I have done the basics, including

1.tested it on a second PC with a working disk to ensure cables and
power supply are good
2. checked all the settings to ensure that CS is selected
3. tried it as a single drive with Master settings

I suspect that the disk is totally dead, but it is only a few months
old and Maxtor will be replacing it. It has been backed up, but I would
like to wipe it before sending it back to them, and at this point I
cannot get my PC to see it at all. Even a plain DOS boot does not see
it.

Any ideas, would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,
Dir

You can try to boot with a disk-wiping utility like the free Darik's
Boot and Nuke, but if the drive isn't seen there really isn't anything
more you can do short of going at it with a drill or sledgehammer. And
I don't think you want to do that if you're RMA'ing it. You need to
send it back intact.
