I had no problem backing up my contact l(address book) using the export
process. I had many of the problems discussed before when trying to back up
messages. Going directly to a folder on my external hard drive it would seem
to backup a few folders and then stop and it would tell me the backup failed
and suggested I do a disk cleanup. That diddn't work. I then tried to
backup to a folder on my desktop and that seemed to work fine; it showed all
the folders being sent to that folder. However, a backup on the desktop is
of little use. When I tried to send this folder to my external drive I got
repeated messages for each file that said the following: "Are you sure you
want to copy file without its properties? The file (number) has properties
that cannot be copied to the new location." What does this mean? If I say
yes, will I be able to restore the files if needed?

I haven't looked into this but the other data it's talking about may be some
metadata of some sort similar to the favorites and photos and other things,
you might check the shell newsgroups for more info on that.

As to it exporting, might be because it's a removable drive and in the past
Outlook Express wouldn't do anything to a removabel drive so something may
still be lingering.

This sounds like a problem with permissions and ownership.
Instead of doing a raw folder copy, why not use the export
facility built in to Windows Mail?
