What is wrong with the DVTool use model for merging wmv files?
.. Located at http://www.musclesoft.de/combatman/software/dvtool.html

I start Muscle Soft Crew's "DVTool v0.53" on Windows XP
.. I press the DVTool "File Processor 2.62" button
.. I select "Merge files" to add my set of wmv files one by one
.. I press the "Start" button to merge the multiple wmv files to one

Even though there are no errors ensued and even though the resulting
supposedly "merged" file is about the size of the combined set of files,
only the first clip seems to play in Windows Media Player when I merge wmv
files.

In contrast, when I run the exact same operation on mpg files, the
resulting combined mpg file runs the three clips in sequence.

What am I doing wrong?

Does CM's DVTool not merge wmv files?
If so, what freeware program would you use to merge wmv files?

My guess is that the tool does not really merge the files
but simply appends one after the other. This works for
unstructured streams like MPEG (even if the result is not a
correct MPEG) but will never work for structured files like
ASF (aka WMV/WMA) or RIFF (AVI, WAV, ...).

Also, you can google for "WMAppend" for a free WMV merging tool.

I have used ASFTools for this purpose with much success.

ASFtools
http://www.geocities.com/myasftools/

AsfTools is a free windows 98/ME/2000/XP program to process ASF,WMV and WMA
files.

Features include:
-Join & Split
-Many different Repairing Tools
-Most operations are done without re-compressing so the quality will not
degrade
-Converting ASF/WMV format to AVI
-Extracting audio stream and saving it as WAV
-Converting WMV1/WMV2 format to MP43
-Making the stream files "Seekable"
-Creating ASX file
-And more ...

This reference http://www.wmptalk.com/ftopic3130.html says:
"You can find WMAppend with Windows Media Encoder,
and if you don't want to mess with command line, a GUI is here:
http://microsoftusernetwork.com/mcored/downloads/WMVappendGUI.rar
NOTE: The GUI migh need the .NET framework in order to work properly."

1. What on earth is "Windows Media Encoder"?
(if it come with Windows, how do we start it up)

2. What the hell is a .NET framework?
(if it comes with Windows, how do we start it up)

Doesn't the Movie Maker that comes with all versions of Windows do the same
thing as AsfTools does with respect to editing wmv files in a storyboard?

C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe

I think the only ting MovieMaker can't do is break the wmv files into
individual frames for fine editing (I think you can only include the entire
clip or not include that entire clip ... but not portions of that clip).

No, asftools joins clips, moviemaker, um, makes movies!

That's exactly what moviemaker DOES do! OK, to be pedantic, it does
every two frames, but use the "divide clip", either in the collection
or on the timeline, and that's what you've got.
Use CTRL-L for "on the beat" dividing, and zoom the timeline to watch
the soundtrack waveform to get the division right too.

You certainly got the buzz! (Or did you mean newbie?)

My most recent movies (at the top)
http://digitaltoast.co.uk/mad/vid/index.php?sort=date&order=desc&path=mm/
(some good, some not so good!)
Also, how to totally waste time with mm!

Hi Avery,

This was an obvious solution... to us atleast as we are reading it in XP
Movie Maker's newsgroup.

Furthermore, Windows Movie Maker does not allow:
* batch processing
* appending without re-encoding
* is not available for Windows 2000 and 98.

C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe

I don't have that directory in my copy of Windows 2000 Professional
Edition. Did IBM remove it before they shipped me the laptop, or is
this something that isn't actually in "all versions of Windows"?

It is not included in any version of Win2K.
