Merging trouble

Hi
I have prepared both the document and the merge portion
On eof the column in the merge portion is a total amount of donations.
I have indicated in the ducumrnt where I want the <<TOTAL>> to show up.
Here is the queer part.
Lets say the TOTAL is $8.00(Showing $ sign) well on the figure 8 shows up in
the merge document(Not even 8.00)
Cab any one tell me what I have to do to show the netire thing.
I know I could insert the $ sign as part of the document BUT then I would
get $8 or $8.1(for $8.10)

Is this Word 2002? Are you merging from Excel?
