Merging text from two cells into one

Hi
try the following in column F (cell F1)
=D1 & E1
or
=D1 & "-" & E1
and copy either down
 
I have an Excel spreadsheet containing phone numbers. The area code is in
column D and the local number is in column E. Is there a way to have the
cells merged into one 10 digit phone number other than manually editing each
7 digit number? Thanks!
