MERGING TEXT FROM TWO CELLS INTO ONE

I have tried using the CONCATENATE FUNCTION as follows:

In the target cell I enter =CONCATENATE(F33,G33)
When I press return the cell content is
the formula I typed =CONCATENATE(F33,G33)
instead of the merged result of text data.

Can you tell me what I am doing incorrectly?
Many Thanks

Format the cell with the formula as non text (general),
do edit>replace and in the find what box put an equal sign,
then in the replace with box put another equal sign, that usually
forces the formula to calculate

I just tried several other types of formulas ...SUM,etc.
and none of them will calculate...I've just upgraded to XP
and now have EXCEL 2002 (10.4302.4219) SP-2. Could that
have anything to do with this happening. This is the first
time I've used formulas since I was upgraded.

Thanks, but I've tried that as well....no luck.

Another way to type formula is
=(f33&g33)

Make sure that there is no TICK ' mark in front of the
=sign. that would cause it to reflect the actual formula
instead of the vaulue.

I tried your suggestion and still no luck. Any other ways
I might do this?

Have you tried Tools|Options|View tab|Formulas check box?

There's no reason it shouldn't work. There are only usually 2 reasons that would cause this and
you have been given both:-

1) The cell was formatted as text, in which case you simply need to format the cell as general,
then hit F2 and then ENTER.

2) You have Tools / Options / View tab / Formulas checked.

If none of these work, then if you like I can send you one that will have working formulas. If
they do not work when you open it on your machione thne you know you have a problem. Conversely
if it does work, then you need to make sure you followed the instructions in 1) & 2).
