Merging contact files

I've somehow lost all my categories for 3000 contacts. I have them
from a 2-week old backup, which is 98% of them.

Can I merge the backup file with my current file so that the records
are matched up (not duplicated) and only the category field
information gets transferred from the backup to the current file?

Outlook 2002 (Office XP), Windows XP Professional.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Got no answer on last posting. Anyone know anything about merging
Outlook data from 2 sources? Thank you.

What are the rules about when duplicates are created when I import or
copy? Will the number of records double, or will some of the files be
recognized as duplicates? Will data from different fields in matching
records be merged? Where can I learn about how this works. This was
quite simple with ACT, but I just don't see any clear instructions in
the help for Outlook. Can you point me to any good resources where I
can learn about how Outlook handles these type of functions? Thank
you.

Data is never merged by Outlook. That's what you need the duplicate checker
tools for.

I would test first to see whether duplicates will be ignored coming from the
source you have in mind before importing thousands of records. .
