The Access table has a datefield formatted as 1/1/04. I would like the date
to appear, in this case, as January 1, 2004 when I do a mail merge and print
the Word document. Can it be done?

Sure. Use the following date/time picture switch at the end of the merge
field:

\@ "MMMM d, yyyy"

The quotes are necessary only when the picture contains spaces--not for such
pictures as MM/dd/yy. For a complete summary of these switches, see the Help
topic "Date-Time Picture (\@) field switch."

Following your recommendation (or so I thought), I went to the word merge
document and where the merge field appears and it looks like

«Incorpdate» I changed to look like this «Incorpdate\@MMMM d,
yyyy»
and it did not work. I have tried to bring up the related help topic but my
word 2000 has been messed up somehow. Could you be more specific when you
say "use the following date/time picture switch at the end of the merge
field? Are you referring to the format or default value in the access design
view or should I put the switch in the word merge document itself? Thank you
and sorry for asking so many questions

First you have to use Alt+F9 to display the field codes. Then you will see

{ MERGEFIELD Incorpdate }

Insert the

\@ "MMMM d, yyyy"

switch inside the closing } so that the field looks like:

{ MERGEFIELD Incorpdate \@ "MMMM d, yyyy" }

Press Alt+F9 again to toggle off the field codes and then execute the merge.

And again note that quotes are necessary for this switch.

I tried it and worked beautifully.
Now if I may, is it possible to change the date as follows
1. assume that the value for the mergefield incorpdate is 1/1/04 (that is
Jan 1, 2004).
2. is there a way that when i do a mail merge the date coming out is say
1/5/04 (that is January 5, 2004). Stated differently and the reason for it
is that I want to send a letter that invariably will be dated some 5 or 6
days later than the Incorpdate. Perhaps there is a function or something for
it?
Thank you very much for your help

Access is a much better tool for manipulating data than Word. Use a Query
in Acccess to do the Date calculation and then use that Query as the
datasource.
