merge pdf docs with word doc

i have a word doc (xp) and i want to attach several pdf docs to it. the 1st works fine; the 2nd appears with diagonal lines across it; the 3rd is readable, but i only get the 1st page. the 1st doc was only 1 page. can anyone suggest something? Thx
