Merge in new contacts?

I have some contacts set up in Outlook 2002. How do I 'merge in' some
more that I have in a plain text file please? If I use File>Import,
that will over-write the existing entries.
 
An import shouldn't overwrite existing contacts unless the ones in the
import file match existing ones and you tell Outlook to "Replace duplicates
with items imported"
