Merge cells and not center

Is there a way to merge cells and not have them automatically center?
I have to merge a lot of cells on a sheet and I'm constantly clicking
the merge button then the left align (or I forget and the formatting
is wrong :-) ). Can I avoid this? (this sheet will not have to be
sorted or anything - it's just for reading and clicking hyperlinks -
so merging will not cause problems later).

Thanks,
Laurie

You can add the Merge Cells button to one of your toolbars:

Choose Tools>Customize
Select the Commands tab
Select the Format category
In the list of commands, scroll about half way down,
to find the Merge Cells command
Drag this command to one of your existing toolbars
Close the Customize dialog box

To merge cells, select the cells, then click the Merge Cells button

The most obvious explanation is that all the cell being merged have the same
alignment formating, ie centered, otherwise when you
merge the cells the Text-alignment-Horizontal box & Text-alignment-Vertical
box, on the Alignment page of Format Cells Dialogue Form, would show blanks
for mixed formatted merged cells. The merging would cause them to default
to "General" & "Bottom".

A short macro would save some time in doing the alignment you want.
