Hi, I am looking for a menu app that can do a menu like the XP sliding menu.
There aren't many out there, most of them are popups. The Ulead Menu.Applet
looks good and reasonably priced. Has anyone used it as a custom plug-in for
FP and does it work in IE4 and NS4 and above? I have written to Ulead about
this with no response. I only wana spend $30 - $40 for a comprehensive menu
app.

Cheers,

Dennis,

Take a look at Likno's AllWebMenus (DHTML) at
http://www.likno.com/examples.html

The Pro version ($60.00) will let you build out
sophisticated menus, including Frames support.

They also offer a lite version ($35.00) which can handle
many tasks.

Both offer FP plugins.

Hope it helps,
JDR

I think both links you posted are dead.

Thanks for the quick response. The XP Start menu must be a new one from
Allweb Menus. That is getting close to what I want but not quite. The menu
in www.lesuretours.co.nz is what I'm after but this is a free one that I
have used and not compatible with NS. It's coding is also very messy (to me)
with endless amounts of tables and cells.

An example of Ulead's on is http://www.ulead.com/ma/samples/slider-1/0-0.htm

Thanks for that. I have installed Sothink and I may have to go with it but
it doesn't seem to have the ability to remember the menu state after a menu
item is clicked and corresponding link opened, that is without using
frames(unlike Ulead's). I will email them about that. Also, the sliding menu
($25) seems to be a separate app from their other menu ($35).

I am having difficulty finding a sliding menu maker app as most are popups
etc. Ulead and Sothink seem to be two of the very few available. Not even
any of the ones that Jimco wrote about on his site can do the vertical
sliding effect, or other ones that have been mentioned in this thread. Free
ones are not really suitable for me anymore and it is too late to change the
style of my clients site now. I should have done my research on menus before
I started the site.

Sothinkj may be the best you can get. I'm not sure but so far, it's the best
I've found. Did you ever hear back from Ulead? Sothink isn't much better.

Is the is the sort of sliding menu you are looking for?

http://holovaty.com/staticpages/2theadvocate_navigation.html

While it doesn't work in NN 4.x it does work in NN 6+, IE 5+, Opera &
Mozilla on the PC. On the Mac I've tested in IE 5.2, Opera 6, Mozilla and
Safari.

Someone better than I am with javascript should be able to tell you how to
modify the small script to make it show the open state.

Perhaps, I will have to use Sothink for my menus. The type of menu is what I
have on a clients site www.leisuretours.co.nz This is a free menu that is a
little messy and doesn't work in Netscape and also a little funky in IE. I
hope you can see the site now, as I seem to have screwed it up by editing it
in FP2003 and probably not using it properly. In actual fact, I will have to
redo the whole thing now, as I had to use some messy (cowboy) approaches to
get the aspx pages to work.

Ye ha! says the cowboy!

Yes Bill, I think you are right. I did hear back from Ulead (today) after
sending an email to them telling them what I though of their support
service.

Included Below:

Dear Sir,

Please see my recommendation as follows:

As long as users' version of IE is 5 at least or above, then they should be
able to get this activity work by enabling relevant options of the IE Java
applets in this way like below,

Launch Internet Explorer and go to Tools =>> Internet Options... =>>
Security tab =>> clicking "Custom Level" button in the "Security level for
this zone" section, then make sure the settings are as follows:

Microsoft VM

Java permission =>> make sure do not set to "Disable Java"

Scripting

Scripting of Java applets =>> set to "Enable"

What about Nescape??

However, many users of Windows XP, IE6 and NS6 and above do not have a Java
Virtual Machine installed by default, so providing any type of instructions
to make changes to those setting would be of no use.

In order use to get the a JVM, the users would have to know to visit the Sun
Java web site to download the Sun JVM and then install it.

I wondered about that also. Thanks. This really annoys me and has put me
right off Ulead (I have used many of their products). Someone could use one
of their menus thinking it added so much to their site not realising that
many, many people couldn't view it. Shows again the importance of a Table of
Contents, or alternative way to navigate through a site and researching
about apps before buying.

I don't use any JavaScript/CSS menu generating apps or FP navigation
components, just plain text based hyperlinks and occasionally image links
implement with FP Includes.

I know what you mean, and perhaps the better way, but my site has about 40
items, all having to be available in each page so I think a DHTML/Java menu
can tidy things up a lot.

I break sites into sections and then only show the sub links available for
the specific section, when within the section, and this is mostly controlled
via ASP coding.

A natural, logical way but unfortunately my client wants full access to all
tours (tour operator) from the initial entry point without loading other
pages. Also the links in the menu are all pointing to the db "?ID=..." and
therefore only needing one other page to display what has been selected. I
suggested all this was possible when I tendered for the job and now I am
sort of paying for it. However, we are also creating an office reservation's
system for him in asp.net and gaining loads of experience. I suppose there
will always be another, simpler way of doing things but I have just gotten
to like the XP slider menu style and am determined to find a way to use it.
