Hi. I have a Compaq Presario 5310. I currently have Windows XP with 256MB
memory and would like to add more. Can anyone tell me what is the best type
of memory to purchase?
Thanks

Hello
I recommend that you purchase the same speed and size that is already in
your computer.
From the information that you give the best I can tell is that your computer
takes PC-100 speed with a maximum of 512 of SDRAM (any popular brand is
alright)

Although XP is very ram friendly it is also picky and does not operate
properly when the ram is not matched properly.

Yes, it does help. Thank you. How would I find out exactly what memory
stick is in my computer so I know what brand or type to buy?

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Ok found it. Here is what it has in system specs:

256MB 133 MHz SyncDRAM, 2 Total DIMM Slots Upgradeable to 512MB (SyncDRAM
DIMM required)

Now, what does that part in parenthesis mean?
Thanks

The easiest way to know what kind of memory is in your computer is to
open it up and look at the memory chip. Copy the information to paper
then go buy it. Get the same kind. :-)

I suggest that you go to www.crucial.com and use their adviser. You can
tell it the exact model you have and it will suggest the best match. It
is a good place to buy from - reasonable prices and top quality
