I have 256 mb of memory, but in system info, it says total physical memory is only 32 mb. Most of my programs are freezing up. I am not sure what to do now.

It sounds like you may have as serious problem wity the physical system.

I suspect an issue eather with the memory stick, or the motherboard. I would suggest that you place a support call with the manufacturer for this issue. If it is not covered by any warenty and you know how I would start by reseating your memory stick. If this is not something you are familiar with I would recomend that you find a local computer shop that can provide you with the service you require.

Some of your memory is bad, or not seated correctly in it's socket, I am guessing you only have one stick of memory. Try pulling it out and reinsertting it, if that does not work, the memory is bad.

Windows XP will not run on a system with only 32 mb of physical memory
so you are either misreading the information or are looking in the
wrong place.

Open Control Panel - System - General. How much memory is reported
on that window (near the bottom)?

That is the amount that is actually being found by Windows. It should
be your total installed RAM minus any amount that is being used for
video (if your computer has the video built into the motherboard
rather than on a separate video card).

Good luck

If you are using an "on board" video card the amount of video memory you have alloted in the BIOS is subtracted from the total system memory.
