Here is a quick question. I have installed Vista on my system with 4GB
memory. However, it will still only see 3 GB. Same problem with XP, but I
had hoped that this hade been fixed in Vista. Anyone know why, and if there
is a fix for it?
Thanks
Terry

No fix for x86, hey that rhymes :)

Now I guess you might think you're a poet, but you sure don't show it.

Hi Terry,

The 32-bit (x86) version has an upper limit of 4GB for addressing, and some
of this is used for the system. The remainder (what you see) is allocated to
memory addressing, and this is the limit you are encountering. You cannot
bypass this limitation in x86, but in x64 you would see all of it.

There has been much discussion about this...
with 32 bit there is not much you can do...

And I think that this will be the biggest reason people will start
migrating to 64 bit (slowley though since it needs a 64bit computer, OS, and
your hardware must have 64bit drivers for them to work).

It's the way the 32-bit systems interact with the hardware that causes
this, and no there isn't a fix, except to run a 64-bit operating
system:

I won't be at work for a week so I can't ask one of the server guys there,
but there is something they put into the boot.ini file on our servers that
makes them see 4GB with Windows Server 2003. Will that not work with XP or
Vista?

Probably the /PAE switch
