Using Windows XP, I tried to upgrade my memory. Before
buying an upgrade (128M-PC100/168) for my intel (SE440BX)
board, I was using an (8x64 64mg/PC100/SDRAM) by Diamond
Memory Products, Inc. The two do not work
together, my BIOS reads 192, but then the OS fails it. It
might need some frivolous setting change. Maybe "low
density" related? Nevertheless, I don't know if it's my
OS,or memory misconfiguration. If it's XP (and software),
the configuration may not need changed from within - but
by the OS. If not I'm probably stuck without upgrade
options.

When installing ram memory ALL ram processors must be of
the same type. Also they must be compatiable with your
motherboard (bios) Mix and match is a no no, as you can
now see.
Also 192mb is not enough, you need at least 512mb
reguardless of what microsoft says.
To find out if it's your os or memory just take out the
new stick and see if everything just goes away.
