I am considering upgrading my notebook from 512MB to 1GB. What are the
better rated/quality manufactures that someone would recommend/consider?

Thanks in advance

I concur that. I always go to that store before memory upgrade especially
for my Dell models to ensure everything will be right.

But I don't always buy from them - confession.

I have known some Dell's to use proprietary memory, so you might want to
check on that. At this point, my own feeling is that memory has pretty much
become generic and I find no real difference between brands. while its not
a total consideration, price is of some consideration to me.

It is absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:

SiSoft's Sandra

Belarc Advisor

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database
to help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model
computer and/or motherboard. Coincidentally, Crucial is the only
company from which I ever buy RAM.

Hi,
Thanks for the info.

I don't know that, but again, thanks for sharing.

And I was referred to that store by Dell's forum many years ago, because it
would check your Dell system for the type of memory is installed and then
provide recommendations.

I personally haven't got any problem at this time - but it is not an
endorsement nor a guarantee for others :)

In any case, I don't do DIY anymore even for a simple task such as upgrading
memory. For personal systems, I'd bring it to the store and have them put
into new stuffs and test right there to ensure everything is ok. Yes, I
don't see any major differences between brands other than "warranty" and
"price".

Why ask here? What memory your board requires has absolutely NOTHING
to do with the OS.

Ask elsewhere.
