I installed a 512MB DIMM that matches the existing 512MB DIMM but now
Internet Explorer, The Media player and other applications crash. I allow for
automatic updates and even ran it manually to make sure I have all XP
patches. The compter recognixes the 1 GB RAM and it shows up in System
Properties. Any thoughts?

the RAM is probably defective or of low quality
generally one should avoid "generic" RAM and go with known good name brands

It sounds very much as if the new RAM module is defective. Have you
tried using the computer with only the new module installed?

Probably a bad chip.

Then contact Crucial Tech support

One thing I thought of...
since you added to RAM to an empty slot...there may have been a bit of dust
or tarnish
on the contacts.
Remove and reseat the RAM a few times...

Then if that does not work...as
suggested run Memtest.

If the RAM is defective I'm sure it's under warranty as Crucial is a
reliable company

In addition to all the other good suggestions, have you modified the
swap file behavior - limiting the size rather than letting Windows
manage it?
