Memory Sticks

Hi,

not sure where to ask this question.

If someone could point me in the right newsroom I would be grateful if
anyone can give me a quick answer here that would be good too.

I cant get access to the contents of my memory stick.

It is a works one, 512 Mb but no manufactures name on it.

Its not that I have lost particular file, I cant access it at all.

not even the light on it activates when I put it into a USB slot, other
devices work in this slot so the PC is ok.

Is there anyway to get at it, maybe reformat it or use some software to
'wake' it up.

There is no data on it I need, I just want to get it going if possible.

You can grab a new one from E-Buyer for less than a fiver (plus
postage). Or you could get a 2 gig version for less than £15.00

It sounds like you got a company discard and are trying to make it
work. Nothing wrong with that. . If it has seen any water damage,
forget it. Have you tried reformatting it in a camera? Does it have a
lock similar to the Memory Stick Pro that stops accidental eraseure of
data?

It's a USB memory stick so I can't reformat it in a camera and there are
no switches on it.

Yes it's a cheap unit and I can get a new one cheap, but I can access it
and get it going with a bit of software then that saves the planet a
bit.

I just hate throwing things away unless they are totally dead.

I have heard that memory sticks sometimes get corrupt and that sometimes
they are recoverable.

But if its not recoverable then so be it I will ask for a new one.

I also hate to throw things away without a fight. Here is a link to a
USB memory stick software recovery. I might work, give it a try . Good

I'v read a couple of articles about the high failure rate of cheap usb
memory sticks. You are probably just as well off tossing it and
buying one from a reputable manufacturer.

Yes your probably right, it was one work gave us all, must have been a
cheap one.

I have my eye on a 2Gb Corsair Voyager GT

fast read and write speed and a rubber case.

The thing about pen sticks is the attachment 'lug', a lot are too
flimsy so break off so they can't attach to your key ring.

AFAIK a lot of problems with USB memory sticks are due to cracked
solder joints at the power pins. I don't know which OS you are using,
but in Windows' Device Manager you may be able to detect the current
drawn by your stick. If the stick is present but showing zero amps,
I'd suspect a cracked solder joint. FWIW, I use a Win98 utility called
usbview.exe to detect the devices on the USB ports. Usbview can see
these devices even if their drivers are not installed.
