memory speed ?

i have a motherboard that can take ddr400 ram and i have 1GIG DDR400 ram
installed

i ran cpu-z from cpuid.com amd it shows the memory frequency as 166.9Mhz -
shouldnt this show as 400Mhz??

I think you have it set to 333. Mine is 400 and it says FSB 199 and
Bus 398

There is no such thing as consumer 400MHz memory; what you have is 200MHz memory that is running at
166MHz.

To clarify, DDR400 runs at 200, but there are 2 accesses
per clock cycle, hence 400 effective.

I found some fine print in the manual for the board it says it supports
ddr400 but in the fine print it says

FSB333MHz only supports DDR333 DIMM Module,

thats why it is running at the speed it is

thanks anyway guys, need to get a better mainboard for it to run at fukk
speed

That could be your processor as it has to support 400FSB also.

Huh? What MB are you running ? And what processor?

We can tell from that.

If you have a processor that maxes out and 333 and cant be OCed then
it doesnt matter if you have 3200 mem.

Well Im assuming you want to OC it to 400 instead of 333 and make the
2600 a 3200 .

Youve got the memory the CPU but your board is rated at 333 max.
Ive actually seen some posts where some say you can OC it but Im not
sure how stable it would be with your board. You can alternatively
buy another one cheap. There are lots of cheaper new KT600 and nforce2
boards. In fact there are some dirt cheap new and refurb boards at
Newegg.

There a cheap Biostar for around 50 bucks or so new nforce2 chipset
look in nforcersHQ forum to see feedback and tips on the various
nforce boards.

CompGeeks had a Amptron made by biostar new for 38 bucks two weeks ago
dont know if they still have itthough .
 
no i dont like overclocking - i prefer a reliable /stable system

i am considering a new motherboard

I have both an Asus A7N8X-X mobo and a Biostar (marketed by another
company, I forget the Biostar model No.), both with nForce2 chipsets.
My CPUs are both Athlon XP 2400+. the Biostar insists on limiting the
RAM speed at 333 while the Asus board gives 400MHz. But the Asus
refuses to run the twin 256MB sticks in dual mode while the Biostar
complies. Changing the slots in the Asus mobo makes no diff.

Memory is best ran at same speed as FSB on an Athlon.
Your CPU is not spec'd to run at higher FSB speed, so buying
another board will support higher FSB speed but unless you
manually change speeds, the memory will run at same speed it's
running now.

Frankly, it's a waste to buy a new board just to get memory
higher. You may be able to simply lower the memory timings and
get most of the gain anyway, but check it with
http://www.memtest86.com after any changes.
 
The Asus A7N8X-X has some limitations due to the -X designation. It can not
run the memory in Dual DDR mode like the A7N8X Ultra 400 version
motherboard. You may want to download the Manual from the Asustek website.
