Memory reporting oddness

I've looked all over for a FAQ that includes this. There has to be one,
but I'll just ask now:

I added a second stick of 512MB, increasing my memory from 512 to 1 GB.
Now it tells me that I have 130,544 KB -- or around 128MB. What gives?

(No indication of any problem, just curious).

You are seeing the difference between "1K" being 1,000 or 2**10 = 1024

What, exactly, reports 130,544KB? BIOS? Some Control Panel process? The
Windows boot process? Some other Windows process? Belarc Advisor?

Do all reports agree?

What is shown on the General tab of Start/Settings/ControlPanel/System?

I right-click on 'My Computer'. I select 'properties'. It tells me
all sorts of things, including the amount of system memory installed.

I've horsed around and found that against amazing odds, I managed to
purchase a bum stick of Kingston memory. With the new stick installed
alone, I get three long beeps, repeating. It'll have to be returned.

Thanx for posting back.

AHA!

I exchanged the RAM and now it reports 1,048,048, which is more like it.
How it came up with 128MB is beyond me, but when there's a hardware
problem, I guess all bets are off.

Call it cross-bus bank-lag interference (an engineering term I just made
up) and let it go. Glad you've got a nice big number back. :-)
