I have 1 gb of mem my question is if I put 2 gb of mem into my box what real
difference would I hope to have__internet access no I know that this would
stay the same_______but opening programs etc and working normally would
there be better response__or please give me a reason to update__I am just a
normal user on the web___thanking all

If you are just "a normal user on the net" there is no reason for more RAM.
If on the other hand you download video/audio and convert those to something
you burn to a CD/DVD that operation will be quicker....If you work with
complicated Video Converstions/Heavy Duty spreadsheets/etc then yes more Ram
will help.
But if your whole system is too old why bother with more RAM..save your
money and replace/update/upgrade the system. Not knowing any of the specs of
your system we can only speculate.

In a nutshell, if you aren't hitting the swapfile on the harddrive when
you are opening and using programs, any additional memory will be of
negligible benefit.

Adding more memory can noticeably improve performance only if the
added memory results in reduced usage of the virtual memory paging
file. Therefore if the paging file is not currently being used to any
significant extent then adding more memory will not provide a
significant improvement.

Unfortunately there is no ready way of determing actual paging file
usage provided with Windows XP - it does not have an equivalent to the
'Memory Manager - Swap File In Use" reporting provided by the System
Monitor utility in Windows 95/98/Me.

There is a free utility that you can download and run which will
provide this information for you. It was written by MVP Bill James and
you can get if from
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm or from
http://billsway.com/notes_public/WinXP_Tweaks/

If that utility shows actual page file usage of 50 mb or more on a
regular basis then that is indicative of fairly significant paging
file activity. Adding more RAM will reduce or even eliminate entirely
this activity thereby improving performance.

This apples regardless of how much or how little RAM is currently
installed in the computer, at least up to the 4 gb RAM maximum for
Windows XP.

Good luck

what should I do about this, is it a sign to go from 1gb to 2gb

You have just over 200 mb of active memory content that has been
relocated from RAM to the pagefile so yes you would benefit from more
RAM. You might get away with just going 1.5 gb or even 1.25 gb but
memory requirements seem to increase over time as new and updated
applications come along so you may soon need the full 2gb even if it
is a slight bit of overkill at the moment.

Good luck
