Hi

I am being LAZY to a certain extent

IF I put 2 x 512mb pc2100 in a machine
and then I put in 1X 1GB pc3200

would the machine get past post and go into Windows XP?
What would happen?

Please Advise
Thank You

Yes it will work BUT it will only run at the speed supported by your MOBO> make sure your MOBO will take/run 2G of Ram:)

No! ... Yes! ... Maybe! ... you can cause damage doing that!

... and everybody wonders why I ask the same questions time and time and time again.

What is the Motherboard? ;)

thanks guys

rite the motherboard is Flopps old one
ummm gigabyte 7400 pro2

what do u think?

the reason why im doing this is
because in my other machine i think i have a faulty memory slot
in that machine was 2 X 1GB so ive taken one of these out and its just lying around and im considering putting it in the gigabyte motherboard

i dont like the idea of damage....

thank you,

yes im sure it can go up to 4gb

I'd guess it should work but you'll lose the dual memory function and the pc3200 will default to pc2100 speed.

You may be better off just using the one stick of pc3200, whole machine will run faster on fsb.

But first, i'd check out the two one gig sticks of memory on your other machine (the one you suspect has a faulty memory slot) by running memtest on it (do a Google for memtest, it's a freebie memory test program).

And clean out the suspect memory slot using either compressed air or a clean fine paintbrush.

thanks

ill try cleaning it out
the biggest problem i had on the 2x 1GB machine
was that the pc would constantly STUTTER
when i played a song or a movie it would randomly STUTTER
it was so annoying

so i took out the memory and reseated both sticks
then i noticed that the pc would only pick up 1gb not 2gb.
so i tried different memory slots and come to a conclusion that one of the two slots is damaged, really dont want to mess around with it much but since ive had just 1gb in that machine it dont seem to stutter ( touch wood)

but Flopps im sure that 2gb of combined pc2100 and pc3200 would be faster then just one pc3200 1gb stick!

So the question is that will the pc always chose the lower speed out of pc2100 and pc3200?

Not neccessarily, not at all. The fsb is more influential on the speed a machine will work at than the amount of memory. After all, you won't actually be using all of that memory all the time, will you?

Yes.

Its possible that having pc2100 and pc3200 in the same motherboard will not make the computer run at all, happened to my friend who bought pc3200 ram and his pc wouldnt get to windows.... we found out that pc3200 ram wasnt compatible.

so dont be surprised if it doesnt work ;)

Normally with gigabyt boards, you can only use certain memory stick combinations (ie when using more slots, you can sometimes only use single sided dimms in some slots and double sided in others) check out your motherboard manual for the details

rite thanks for the info guys

i also thought that it would not work

but i thought it would be nice to ask peoples thoughts before putting it in
i mite do at some point this week

should I add a poll on this post? yes or no?

How about a poll to see if a poll is needed!

No ...

Why don't you try it ...

Methinks itsme's been hitting the cookin' sherry a little early in the evening...... ;)

Either that or attending a reunion of all the WW2 Polish Spitfire Pilots at the local mess hall :D

PSD99: Just try it, it shouldn't hurt anything.

And please take in what I said earlier, as Mr Mucks pointed out.

Memtest is the one..... ;)

Just stick it in PSD, your computer will either accept the additional memory and post and start as normal (albeit only running the full 2GB at pc2100),

or your PC will reject the memory, and will just not post/start...in which case take it out again.

lmao

I will be on the case soon!!!! :)
and itsme definetly been taking something!! :)
