I just got another 512M DDR chip, but every time I install it my video
drivers go ?? its a wierd problem, I have installed lots of memory in the
past, and it just updates. but this time I install it, and I can't play any
of my games?? when I reinstall newest video drivers it crashes, but then
when I take new chip out go back to 512Meg, everything works? I find this
strange as video is not shared? its a new motherboard P4 2.66 LV4XA2
motherboard, and I used same memory type as I originaly put in, Vid card is
a Ti4600 (not new but works pretty good.) is this a problem I would expect
from BAD memory?? what would be most common reason for the problem I have,
is there an easy fix? or is it bad memory ( common to bad memory ) and
exchange the chip for a new one??

You tried removing the original memory and using only the new module?

Test it for several hours with http://www.memtest86.com , with both
modules in it.

Often a board won't work with modules having minimal spec, or if the
board itself isn't all that stable, when multiplie modules are used.
If you've set the bios to aggressive memory timings (or even if you
haven't) you might try setting it to more conservative, slower timings
(larger numbers), then retest with memtest86. Do not run the OS while
the memory is in question... even though you're mainly seeing
video-related errors, there could easily be lots of file/data
corruption going on, unnoticed... even after you get the memory
resolved you may have corrupt data on the hard drive, burnt optical
discs, floppies, etc, written while the 2nd module was installed.

Unfortunately, if you can't get two of these same modules to work, you
can replace the new one but the original may still be problematic
paired with a different module, it might be necessary to replace both,
or possibly the motherboard... you ought to check for BIOS update for
the motherboard, and do some 'net searching for memory issues.

Which OS are you using? Win98se will not work with more than 512MB of RAM,
for instance.

Not true. Win98SE will have errors with 512MB or more unless the
vcache setting is adjusted.

Sorry. I am running Win XP home.. I know everything works great w/ 512M but
I wanted to goto 1gig just cause. to have plenty of memory, also just cause
the motherboard supports that much and more. I just never ever had errors or
problems before adding memory. I had older mobo back in the 386 win 3.1 days
when I had to goto bios, and save bios w/ new memory upgrade. but never
since windows 98 had I ever had to do that.. what blows me away is it was
exact same memory brand, and size, 512M patriot pc3200 400Mhz 164pin dimms
( have 1 works fine, added 2 and it was disaster :(

but I took new one out for now, re-installed video drivers and all seems to
work fine now, but I thought this might be a common for bad memory to have
this type of problem, or there was something I was missing that would be a
quick fix. cause it did recognize the memory size. said I had 1gig mem. but
messed up the video bad, and when I took it out all was perfect.??
