i have a dell inspiron 8200 with 512mb is there any way to physically check
to see if the memory sticks are connected and is there any software available
to help.
When i play music and try to use a another program like word the sound from
the media player starts to cut out like there isn't enough ram to run on.

i have never opened the laptop so i don't know where the memory sticks are
and how to check them.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties..... it will tell you on
that page how much RAM is installed.

Bottom right. Computer: Then it will have the type of CPU and it's speed
and the amount of memory you have.

As for replacing them or where they are in the notebook, that's what your PC
manual is for. Each notebook is different, so there's no generic "they're
here" diagram.

Open Control Panel - System - General and see how much RAM is being
detected by Windows. Depending on how much RAM is allocated to video
you may see a figure anywhere between 448 and 512 mb.

If your RAM was not compatible you would almost certainly be seeing
other problems in addition to the music one you are having.

Did the Dell come with the 512 mb from the factory or did you add more
RAM after you purchased the machine? If you added more RAM did you
get it from a reputable source such as Crucial or Kingston or was it
some bargain or generic brand? Laptops can be fussy about RAM.
