I'm having real problems printing on my lj 4000. it was purchased on
eBay with a sub 10k pagecount. in very good condition.

I've been working my way through all the drivers
http://tinyurl.com/yfswl7 but now suspect it may be a memory problem.

Test pages print fine but i'm now finding anything i try to print gets
'stuck' at 64kb and then fails to print.

Any idea what could be causing this and how to remedy it?

does the printer have extra memory in it.
if it does, take it out and try again.
what operating system do you have and what program are you trying to print
from.

i have a 4000 with an extra 64m memopry with no problems.

the printer is a workhorse with an instant on fuser so it is great to use.

good luck.

When it works it's fantastic (which is why i bought one - have used
them in corporate environments for years).

I suspect it has the 'stock' memory only -
- how do i find out?
- where does the memory install (i can't see a labelled access port)?
- can i replace the 'stock' memory?

go through the menus and print out the configuration under the information
menu on the display.
that page will give you the memory situation as well as error codes for the
pages that did not print.
you should google the error codes to get a better idea of what is wrong.

to get to the add on memory sockets, slide back the upper right-side panel
and then unscrew the phillips screw and the sockets will be exposed.

also, did you try printing from another computer.
lastly, hp has software for the 4000 which i like better than the winxp
drivers.

B33K34-

You might try re-seating the memory, but I doubt that is the problem.
It is likely that the printer performs a memory test during the turn-on
sequence, and would report trouble then.

Another possibility is that the communications link between the computer
and printer has a "handshake" incompatibility. The computer starts
sending the print job, the printer's memory fills up, the printer
signals the computer to stop sending, but the computer continues sending
until all data has been transmitted. This might be a malfunction of the
printer's data circuit, but it also might be due to using a printer
cable that is not fully IEEE compliant. (You didn't say, but I assume
you are using the parallel port.)

It is possible that the previous owner had a custom setup in the
printer. It might help to reset it to factory defaults. Some HP
printers will reset if you hold down the On-line/Off-line (or
Pause/Resume) button while turning on the power. If you succeed, you
will then need to re-enter any setup data of your own.

I've been using the HP universal driver and then worked my way through
the others.

The problems have all been while using the jetsend networking - one of
the attractions of this printer was that i could leave it on my network
and print from either my wireless laptop or the other pc (and it meant
i could eBay my printserver).
go through the menus and print out the configuration under the information
menu on the display.

Printer spec:
Total memory 4mb. IO buffering 10k allocated of 100 bytes available
(odd setting?) All Dimm slots empty.

The config page doesn't show anything in the event log. I then tried a
parallel cable which let me print both my test word file and my test
pdf.

Switching back to Network i can print the pdf (164kb) but the word doc
still sticks at 64kb of 108. Very odd. The word file seems to be the
problem and sometimes that screws up the ability to print anything.

I've got somewhere - i know i can use the parallel cable as a fall
back. However, this doesn't give me a reliable printer as i'd really
prefer to use it on the network

Ok, I've now established i can print the problem document can be
printed from my other pc over the network. So it now looks like the
Thinkpad is the problem.

After a bit of googling i've tried booting with none of the startup
applications running but that made no difference.

So now i have an issue sending docs from a particular pc, over the
network, which is slightly different.

Likely not the Thinkpad, but the Windows on it.

Delete the printer from the Thinkpad and look at the end of this message
for the procedure to set it up on Windows XP:

Thanks. I'm not quite sure how that's different to adding a printer
via the 'network printer' option.

i used the Windows driver this time. However, as before - test page is
OK but my 'test word document' gets stuck. This time at 240kb of 540kb
(so the size is registered as larger)

Any other thoughts?

On the Thinkpad, print the document to a file and FTP that file to the
printer. If it prints, suspect the Windows print spooler or other
things like "personal firewalls".
