Does anyone know if Apacer memory is certified for this board, or know of a
link that will help? I've googled and have searched both ASUS and Apacer for
info but have not found any. Any help appreciated.
The QVL for that board is in the manual. In my copy here, it is on
page 23 of 64 pages:
http://www.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/sock478/p4s8x-x/e1217_p4s8x-x.pdf
There are two tidbits in the manual:
"According to SiS specifications, PC2700 maximum to 2 DIMMs
support only."
The other tidbit, is the QVL
DDR333 DIMM Qualified Vendor List
The following table lists the DDR333 memory modules that have been
tested and qualified for use with this motherboard.
Vendor Model Type/Size
Hynix HY5DU28822BT-J PC2700/256MB
Kingmax KDL648T4AA PC2700/256MB
Kingmax KDL648T4AA PC2700/512MB
Micron MT46V16M8 PC2700/128MB
Micron MT46V16M8 PC2700/256MB
Nanya NT5DS32M8AT-6 PC2700/256MB
Nanya NT5DS32M8AT-6 PC2700/512MB
Winbond W942508BH-6 PC2700/256MB
Winbond W942508BH-6 PC2700/512MB
Samsung K4H560838C-TCB3 PC2700/512MB
Samsung K4H560838D-TCB3 PC2700/512MB
Mitsubishi M2S12D30TP PC2100/1GB
I would say, grab two Apacer memories, like some PC3200
modules, and plug them into slot 1 and slot 3 for best
performance. The Apacer could have Samsung chips on it,
making it similar to the Samsung entries in the table above.
A PC3200 stick is backward compatible, and will run at
PC2700 (DDR333) or PC2100 (DDR266) when downclocked. A
PC3200 stick is nice to have, if you ever upgrade to a
motherboard that can use DDR400 memory.
I have little faith in the QVL lists from Asus. Just so
you know why I wrote the previous paragraph for you. There
are definitely some combinations of chipset and memory
chips that don't like one another, but don't expect to
see those combinations reflected in a QVL. There are
frequently cases where virtually none of the memory in
the QVL can be purchased by an end user, making the list
useless. For example, the list above has two Micron
entries, and since Crucial sells Micron modules, using
Crucial part numbers, the end user has no way of knowing
which Crucial part to buy, in order to get a Micron
MT46V16M8.
Your choices are, to try Googling "Apacer P4S8X-X", to
see if someone else has tried it. Or, buy your ram
locally, with a "right to return or swap" from your
vendor. Or even, have them test it in your computer
at the store. That is if you are afraid of being stuck
with modules that won't work. The last few modules I've
bought were bought on line from Crucial, as they have
a guarantee. Any retailer with reasonable policies
regarding the purchase of ram, is a contender for your
"short list".
(In other words, I put more weight in the reputation
and policies of the vendor, than I do in the brand
of the memory. A lot of value ram type DIMMs can
be made by up to three different supplies, so when
you buy, you don't know what chips are being used
anyway.)
I bought some modules on sale from my local computer
shop, and they only had a one year guarantee. One of
the sticks died after about a year and a half, and
taught me a "cheap" lesson :-(
