Memory managers

Does any think that memory managers that claim to speed up your PC actually
work? Won't XP do its best to optimise performance anyway? Do they make a
difference?

If possible I want to improve performance without spending money upgrading.
Are there memory settings in XP that can be tweaked?

Those memory managers are a scam with XP: they won't help, and they may hurt.

You may get some improvement by increasing the amount of virtual memory
allocated, but probably not. If your MB is using the fastest settings your
physical RAM allows (normally true), you are done. The one tweak that will
help is the McVisa trick (buy more memory).

Total garbage! Memory managers went out along with DOS based operating
systems.

Third party memory managers do make a difference.. they TAKE more than they
GIVE back.. in this way, your system performance will actually DEGRADE,
albeit not by much.. hardly advantageous, eh!!!

Beware also of programs that claim to work in the background to prevent
system crashes.. Windows own functions maybe simple but are within the core
of the operating system, and do not use up resources in anything like the
same way as third party software does..

The best thing you can do is to fine-tune your startup settings for
both applications and services.

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG to see what is being loaded.

Check out the items on the Startup tab with
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php to see what can be
safely dispensed with and how to do it.

For the Services tab I have been using
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm but that site has been
unavailable in recent days and I am not sure when it will be back
online. Perhaps someone else can suggest a page with reliable
information about Windows XP Services and how to reconfigure them
safely.

Another thing you can do is to avoid bloated applications that bring
your system to its knees, such as anything from Norton/Symantec.

Good luck

Agree on the Symantec front - I have never seen such bloated system
resource waster priograms in my life.

I think Dell have now stopped using Norton on all new PCs now! thank God.
