I have an odd problem. My available system memory seems to be slowing going
away, for example i am running Desktop Doctor V 1.5 and it shows available
memory at 75% after a reboot of the machine and shutting down the unnecessary
stuff that im not using. Last night with the cpu on and nothing running was
at 75% this morning got up and available memory was 3%. Have to reboot just
to start anything. Is this a known problem, any ideas?
Not a known problem at all.
Any idea what is using the memory? I would suspect "Desktop Doctor"
just on general principles. Most of these products are snake-oil at
best and often the description pure unadulterated crapware is
appropriate.
In general terms available memory, at least in the context that it is
reported on the Performance tab of Windows Task Manager, should be
referred to as "useless memory" because that is what it represents,
memory for which Windows has so far been totally unable to find any
beneficial, or even potentially beneficial, use for. By design
Windows will always attempt to find some use, anything at all that
might be of value, rather than just leaving the memory sitting there
idly going to rot.
That said, if the performance of your machine is being adversely
affected then there is something amiss. Bring up the Windows Task
Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), go to the Processes tab, and click twice on
the Mem Usage column header to sort the list into descending order
based on Memory usage. Leave Task Manager running minimized on the
task bar and check it periodically to see if there is an item or items
that appears to be regularly increasing the amount of memory they use.
That will be a direct clue as to what is going on and why. Post the
name(s) of these items and their memory usage data back here.
Good luck
