memory issues

Hi, lately I have noticed it takes several minutes to load
my setting instead of the few seconds it used to. i am the
only user of my pc and have administrator status. I didn't
add more programs in the start up except McAfee, which i
already uninstalled to see if the problem would disappear,
but it is still there. More over, while running MATLAB i
get out of memory messages when doing same thing than
before used to run properly. Also, while recording a cd
the mouse coursor doesn't move as smooth as it used to. All
this when only two or at most 3 programs are running
simultaneously (before i used to have up to 10 windows open
witout troubles...) Do you have any ideas what the problems
could be due to? Where should i check ? I increased my
virtual memory to almost 3 times the physical one (which is
~1Gb, my hard drive is ~100Gb and far of being full) but
that doesn't help either.
Last thing: when running task manager, nothing unexpected
seems to be running or consuming more memory....
thanks for your help!
