Memory installed - computer shows smaller amt.

Why is it that Windows XP shows ~ 480 Mbytes, when my cousins computer has
512 Mb installed ( 2 - 256 Mb sticks). He says He has seen this on other
computers too.

Don't know the computer brand you're using but, one explanation could be
that the 480 Mbytes is the usable memory.
I.E. The area of memory used by any device using DMA (Direct Memory Access)
is not available for programs.
 
If the video card is built into the motherboard then the missing amount is
shared as video memory.

Because he has no video card, but instead has video support built in
on the motherboard. Since there is no separate video card with memory
on it, the built-in video support uses some of the main system memory.
In his case, it uses 32MB out of the 512, leaving 480MB available.

He says He has seen this on other
computers too.


Yes, it's common that either 32MB or 64MB is used for this.
