My system is running Windows 2000 and opening IE to blank home page. When
entering a URL to navigate to, the error occurs: "Windows Internet Explorer
has encountered a problem and needs to close". If I then select to debug, the
error message is "The instruction at 0x01fd2227 referenced memory at
0x5abb5573. The memory could not be written. ...No debuggers are registered
that can debug this exception."

Thanks for any suggestions to resolve this problem.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Thank you, Frank! I started working my way through the steps on Sandi's page
and after removing some items from StartUp Folders, the error message and
termination stopped occurring. It's not clear what was specifically causing
the problem and IE is opening very slowly, so I'll continue referring to the
resources you provided and be much more cautious with any downloads and
upgrades in the future.
