IN SIMPLE TERMS, CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN WHAT MEMORY, DMA, IO AND IRQ IS? THE
PROCESS OF CONFIGURING THEM ARE COMPLETELY CONFUSING ME
Memory: two definitions. Just your RAM is considered memory. In windows,
your RAM (physical memory) and a reserved amount of space on the hard drive
(virtual memory) is considered memory.
DMA: Direct Memory Access. This is a chip on the motherboard that moves
data without checking with the onboard cpu for that right.
I/O: Input/Output. This is general data movement on your PC. Which
includes data in and out of the CPU, the hard drives, floppies, CD/DVDs and
so forth; and finally RAM itself.
IRQ: Interrupt Request. This is a request to move data on a bus. There are
8 per chip, and two chips responsible. Windows XP has altered this usage
with software.
