Here's what my computer sez I have available in memory
resources when PhotoShop CS is running:

total physical: 2,728,612kb
available physical: 2,433,316 kb

total virtual: 21,681.444 kb
available virtual: 21,185,172 kb

It would seem adequate to me.

But when I attempt to scan tramsparencies with my 4870 at
pretty high resolution but making files well within the
physical memory available, I get the message

Could not allocate sufficient memory.

And the scanning software closes

I'm using the latest software from Epson.

Obviously, I don't have something somewhere set right.

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Larry Jones

Unfortunately, you probably aren't doing anything wrong. I am guessing this
occurs when you are scanning medium format or large format at a high
resolution setting and/or with ICE, right? Apparently there is a limitation
to how high you can go due to the Epson hardware which is not revealed on
the box or marketing materials. Epson now makes a reference to this
somewhere buried way deep down in their documentation.

FIWI, if you turn ICE off, that will increase the amount of dpi (ppi) you
can aquire before you get the error message.

I've had the problem when scanning 35mm negatives at 16 bit,
4800 ppi. Also with bigger negatives, of course. I don't use
ICE.

I've had a similar message with Vuescan software.

Does anyone know if the new Epson 4990 has this problem?

Thanks.
