My laptop has 1gb of memory installed but when right click on 'My Computer'
it says that there is only 768mb

How can I allocate more for general use?

My laptop is Amilo by Fujistu Siemens

Thank you,
Samuel

The memory may be allocated for the integrated graphics. When
the graphics are done in the Northbridge chip, there are no
memory chips like on a desktop graphics card. They use system
memory (called unified memory architecture or UMA). It is possible
there is an option in the BIOS to reduce it.

Check with the MB manufacturer. They usually have replacement
(later) bioses available, which you can install.

When you bootup you should get a message such as:

Press "delete" to enter setup.

Note: not all bios's use the delete key...so check with your manual

If its not the delete key and you can't find your manual then try "F2" or
"escape", those are also common but not as common as "delete".

Also, you might not get a message saying "Press delete to enter setup"
because its becoming more common for the bios to display a logo rather than
detailed messages. So if you don't see a message then as soon as it starts
up try each of the different keys (delete, f2, escape). If it gets as far as
loading windows then you've missed it, so reboot and try again.

Your laptop is using onboard ram for video ram. To get more standard
ram, try going into the cmos/bios and allocating less ram for your
onboard video card.
