Memorex CD problem

Can anyone tell me if they have had problems recording to Memorex
CDs? I don't seem to be able to copy to new blank memorex CDs,
though other makes work all right both copying and playing. When
I put in a memorex , sometimes it says "no disk in drive", other
times it says "disk full", when it's brand new, just out of the
box. Other times it seems to be recording, then when I go to
play it back, (despite right-click showing some of the tape
used), it plays nothing back at all. It has been suggested to me
that I need to download firmware for my drive - but looking at
the Samsung page, I don't fancy the "going into dos" part of the
procedure. Is this problem normal? I update my WXP Pro system
regularly, and would have thought that this was enough.
Apparently not.

Thanks if you can help.

I actually prefer memorex.

Make sure that the size marked on the disk is compatable with your drive
(I.E. 700mb, 720mb). You can find this info from the web site of your drive.
Updating BIOS is always risky and should only be done when there is a dire
need.

Yes, the disk size is 700mb. I just had a thought, when I go to
the website of my drive, am I checking the drive of the CD copier
drive or the other one (where I put the disk to be copied into,
if you know what I mean)?

I am wary of going into dos as I am no expert in this field. I'd
rather just not use memorex, but it's supposed to be a good make,
so I was a bit concerned that these are playing up. Could it
just be a bad lot of CDs?

Thank you.

Over many years I have had intermittent problems with Memorex media of all
types. With Memorex CD's some batches seem OK others have many bad/unusable
CDs. I have quit using that brand and have far fewer coasters.

Since the drive is working fine with other disks, I would suspect the media
is faulty. Whether it's just that box (one of a bad batch) or typical for
that brand - I have no idea.

Thanks Kerry, I think that's what I will do too!

Your welcome. If the problem continues with other brands then it may be the
drive itself or a bad cable.

Kerry

Thanks for your input, Sharon. Yes, that's the difficulty. I'm
not sure if it's a bad batch either. Don't want to buy any more
memorex just to check, though!

Hi Scot,

If you need suggestions, I've always had good luck with Sony, TDK, Maxwell,
and Verbatim discs. Circuit City has a 50-pk of CD-Rs for $6.99 this week.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. That IS cheap. Trouble
is I am just a little bit out of reach - across the Atlantic, in
the UK. Never mind. I have used the other makes you mentioned in
the past, and I don't think I've had any problems with any of
them. I wouldn't normally make a fuss but it's just that I bought
quite a large amount of these Memorex quite a while ago (can't
recall where the receipt is!), and I didn't want to just dump
them. Btw, do you know if blank CDs bought in or from the USA are
compatible with ours in the UK? I suppose they are, since we have
bought CDs in the States and they work over here. I know that
video tapes and machines are not always compatible. Probably some
technical reason ;0)

You may have just received a bad batch. I mostly buy Verbatim discs if I can
find them at a reasonable price; however, ANY brand I buy (including store
brands) seem to work. Sony recommends Verbatim discs be used with their
burners. I would guess that CD discs are the same in the USA and UK. DVDs
may be slightly different because most pre-recorded DVDs in the USA can be
played only in the region where they were purchased although that
restriction may just be added during the recording process.

HOW long ago did you buy? I just threw out all the unused CD-R media I had
bought more than five years ago. When I tried to use one I saw the same
symptoms you describe.

CD-R disks are an international standard. Your television might be a bit
flickery compared to 30 fps in the USA, but to DVD or CD recordable media it
is all bits. The universal language, all 1s and 0s. As for cost, pretty
soon the vendors will be paying the customers to cart away CD-R disks B^)

Hi Phil,

I don't think they are THAT old - say about 6 months at the most.
But, well, you never know! That's a computer lifetime these days.

How many do you have left? If you have under 25, I'd say trash them. CDRs
are VERY cheap nowadays. If you have more than 25 you could probably use
them as back up discs. I have some old ones (not memorex) and that's what i
use them for.

But back-ups should be done on the very BEST media you can find, not iffy
stuff.

That's true Phil. I was thinking that if the disc is gonna be barely used
then it shouldn't be a problem, at least for me it's not. But that does
make sense what you said :-)

It is only used when you really, really need it B^)

To "Phil Weldon" and techie:

Oops! I haven't made myself terribly clear, have I? They don't
copy/write to or ANYTHING. And they certainly won't play or run
in any way. That's why I have a problem.

I'm going to dump them - there are only 25 anyway.

Thanks guys .

Oh, you were perfectly clear. And honestly, stores WILL be paying you to
take CD-R disks away soon. What with Dual layer DVD R/W drives in $40 USD
range, and single DVD R/W blanks in the $1 USD range.
