Hi,

I have a server which is a member server in a domain. When
I do search for this computer name in the "Active
Directory users and Computers" I am getting this server
and the machine role is showing as "Domain Controller"

Why the normal server role is showing as domain
controller. Thanks for any help

Regards

David

David,

Just a couple of quick checks for you:

When you open up the ADUC where is the computer account
object: in the Domain Controllers OU or in the default
Computers Container ( or wherever you might have moved
it )?

When you Right Click on My Computer, select Properties and
go to the Network Identification tab, does it have
an "added" message at the bottom? The message would be
something to the effect: This Machine can not be changed
because: it is a domain controller.

These are simply two really quick checks. There are some
advanced utilities that can do a really good job. Try
installing the Support Tools on all of your WIN2000
Servers. The Support Tools can be located in two places:
on the WIN2000 Server CD in the Suppott | Tools folder or
on the WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the Support | Tools
folder. I would opt for the Service Pack CD if possible.

Take a look at NLTest as well as both Repadmin and
ReplMon. You can also run both netdiag /fix and then
netdiag /v and dcdiag /v from a command line. Please do
this on all DCs as well as on the Server that *thinks* it
is a Domain Controller.

Here is another thing that you can check: I saw it posted
in an earlier posting and that triggered my noggen!

Take a look at the Registry ( Disclaimer: Messing with the
Registry, i.e., making changes when you do not know
EXACTLY what those changes will do, is extremely
dangerous! ) and look specifically at the following:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions and
let us know what the ProductType value is. Is it one of
the following: LanmanNT or ServerNT? If yes, which one?

Cary
