Member of Admins group; but can't administer?

Bit baffled here, it's been a while since I was neck deep in security
stuff. Access 2000 sp3.

I part way through item 33 in the secfaq, where a second "user" mdw is
created sort of in parallel to the dev mdw. I have created a new user
SiteAdmin, made them a member of the Admins group, and logged on as that
SiteAdmin user. Well, as the SiteAdmin user I'm not allowed to log in to
the database at all. I don't have the needed permissions supposedly. I
see that I'm allowed to create users and assign to groups, which is
great, but why can't I log on to the database?

The dev mdw and the user mdw were created using different names etc. But
I thought the whole idea of item 33 was that the admins group in both
mdw files would allow a subset of shared turf; certainly being allowed
ot log on is the first step. I am missing something, can anyone tell
what it is?

No. You have two different mdw files. The *only* thing they have in common
is the Admin user and the Users Group. The Admins Group is not the same
(that's the point actually). If you want SiteAdmin to have other
permissions, you need to make that user also a member of the various groups
you have.

Oh, that's a laugh! Thanks! Of course...security in Access always seems
like a strange nightmare when I have to delve back into it. And it
always makes perfect sense when I've refreshed my understanding.

Joan, I'm not sure if people get around to thanking you much for all of
your contributions here, but you are a lifesaver. I've found during my
recent reimmersion in Access security that this newsgroup has been a
great resourse, and that most of the best responses are from you.
Thanks!
