MediaPlex & Zedo How can I stop them?

Bill & Debbie

Everytime I run Spybot, these are found and I tell SpyBot to remove them and
it appears that they were removed. However, in not time, they are back. I
not sure I fully understand them and I would like to know is there anyway to
block them so they will not come back.

Did you scan in Safe Mode ?

I ran SpyBot in safe mode and they were not found. However, I'll be willing
to be within a week or so, they will be right back. Any ideas on how to
block would be appreciated.

I have the same problems with several - mediaplex,
doubleclick, and a few others. They are always there within
a day or two of running anti spyware in safemode.

Is it possible make your own hosts file and just add what
bothers you rather than using a predefined hosts file that
may contain things you want/?

You can edit c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts with
Notepad, if you want.

Sure, Louise. But I would suggest that you try HostsMan from
abelhadigital.com. You can use it to manage your HOSTS file. I have
_never_ had to remove an entry from the MVPs HOSTS file because it
prevented me from connecting somewhere. I put this together the other
day for my daughter.

Use a HOSTS file to block the sites of known malware purveyors. I
use HostsMan (free for Personal Use, read the EULA) from
abelhadigital.com to import the MVPs HOSTS file.

It ships with the hpHosts HOSTS file as the default. I don't care for
the guy, but you can use it if you want. To import the MVPs HOSTS
file, and have it be the default HOSTS file for importing,

a) From Hosts menu, Manage Updates ...
b) Check MVPs HOSTS file, uncheck others.
c) From Hosts menu, Check for Updates ...
d) Set to Overwrite, and disable Automatic Updating.
e) Click on the Globe Button (main window) to start the Updater.
f) Click on Update Button, and follow the prompts.
g) Click on the Folder Button (main window) to start the Editor.
h) Do a Ctrl+F to look for sites, such as CoolWebSearch.
i) Close the Editor.
j) From Tools menu, Options ...
k) Play with the options if you want.
l) Click on the H Button (main window) to enable/disable the HOSTS
file. Toggle it a few times.
m) When you close the HostsMan window, it will go to your taskbar tray.

Check for updates once a week or so. The HOSTS files are updated a
couple of times each month. I don't use automatic updates for any of
my applications, OS, AV, HOSTS file, browsers, clients, whatever. I do
use automatic updating for my AV (KAV) and SAS signatures. I keep the
HostsMan in my Quick Launch, and run it from time to time.

Using a HOSTS file will not interfere with your connection if you
disable DNS Client service. On the MVPs Web Site,

Editors Note: in most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb)
tends to slow down the machine. This only occurs in W2000
and XP.Windows 98 and ME are not affected.
